What Are My Rights As A Tenant?
As a tenant, you have several rights protected under the Rental Housing Act and common law.
Right to a written lease agreement – The lease agreement clearly outlines the terms and conditions, including the rental amount, duration of the lease, and payment terms
Right to Habitable Dwelling – The landlord must ensure the property is habitable. This includes the upkeep of the property.
Right to Privacy – The landlord must notify you at least 24 hours before entering the premises, this excludes emergencies.
Right to a Refundable Deposit – If you paid a deposit, it must be invested in an interest-bearing account, and you are entitled to a refund with interest at the end of the lease term if there are no damages and unpaid rent.
